  Animal Essentials Glycerin-based Compound Formulas

Spring is here and I am already seeing many people coming in, looking for cures for itching, hotspots, and     flaky skin.  As well as anxeity relief from Thunderstorms.  We offer many ways to help your pet with these issues but I’d like to highlight 2 products by Animal Essentials.

This excerpt is taken directly from the book Herbal remedies for Dogs and Cats by Mary Wulff-Tilford and Gregory L. Tilford that we stock in the store.

What is a Compound Formula Tincture?

What sets Animal Essentials apart from other tinctures is that it isn’t Herbalmade with alcohol (many animals hate the taste of alcohol and it is hard to administer a proper dosage), but is made instead with Glycerin.  A compound formula is a tincture that contains one or two “base herbs” that represent the primary focus of the formula, and act as buffering carriers for the other, perhaps more potent, elements of the formula.  The base herbs constitute the largest percentage of the formula, and are usually comprised of gentle, tonic herbs that will strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. Herbs that act to relieve only the uncomfortable symptoms of disease, or those associated with a risk of side effects, are usually proportioned in smaller percentages of the formula. The goal of herbal therapy is not just symptomatic relief, but to help the body heal itself by addressing the underlying causes of disease.

Tinctures are wonderful because they are liquid and easily given with a dropper and they are readly absorbed into the pet’s system.

Spring Tonic

This is a wonderful compound formula to help seasonal allergies and we have it in stock!  This tincture supports natural immune functions during hay fever season. This formula deals with only outdoor allergies.  It contains extracts of certified organic nettle leaf, eyebright herb, burdock root and licorice root. Vegetable glycerin USP and distilled water. Alcohol free.

For Thunderstorm anxiety we are getting RAVE reviews from our customers on this next product.  I also use this on our 16 year old sweet Dachshund, who is dealing with Dementia Night Terrors, and we have had great success calming her down with this.

Tranquillity Blend

A sweet tasting, alcohol free tincture formula for dogs and cats, to promote a calm and restful state during thunderstorms, fireworks and other stressful events. This is our best selling tincture blend! It is mildly sedative and calming.

It contains extracts of certified organic valerian root, skullcap herb, passion flower and oat flowering tops. Alcohol free.

Please keep in mind that we carry a wide variety of products to help with both of these issues.  And every dog is unique and has their own unique issues and concerns.  Feel free to call me or come on in to discuss what might work in a natural way to help solve your dog’s specific issues!

Until next month….

Thundershirt Review from one of our customers

Nancy,

Our Collie, Misty is 9 years old and extremely Thunderphobic.  She is destructive of her surroundings and harmful to herself.  One time she chewed through one of those screen door protectors, you know the steel kind that prevents dogs from running through the door.  In minutes she chewed a whole in it, leaving metal shards on the floor!  We were really worried about what was inside her!  She gets anxious, hyperventilates, and cannot settle down and sit still.

On your advice, we used the Thundershirt.  The first time was a night that had multiple storms.  We did also use the Apawthecary drops you suggested. Misty woke up with each storm, but, after a second or two of fussing, settled back to sleep!  Amazing.

Second scenario:  We had a Rescue dog, Honey, that scraped her front nails down to the quick.  There was blood everywhere.  She even wounded her back ankle.  Needless to say this was going to be a hard dog to place.  NOT!  We put the  Thundershirt on her when the forecast called for storms.  Once again, multiple storms hit us.  She was in the kitchen in the kennel.  I was very nervous about what I was going to find the next morning.  I am very happy to say that everything was perfect.  Absolutely nothing was wrong and she met me with a
smile and a wag!  Nancy, without the Thundershirt, Honey would have been waiting a very long time for her Forever Home.  Instead, I included the Shirt in her adoption package and recommended the Apawthecary drops. Reports back from her new home are excellent!

Thank you for helping us help these dogs.  I have tried everything for Misty, and nothing did any good.
